Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Match Day set a record Tuesday, drawing more than half a million dollars in donations from the community.

Though final dollar amounts won’t be available until early next week after all mailed donations are processed, the current total stands at more than $400,000 raised from 927 donors. If that number holds, when combined with the community foundation’s $100,000 matching pool and prize grants, the total amount raised in support of Reno County nonprofit organizations will be more than $500,000.

Gifts on the previous Match Day in 2016, combined with the $50,000 matching contribution, totaled $267,801 from 729 donors.

Organizers were overwhelmed by this year’s response, especially after plans for the original in-person event were thwarted in late March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even though the look and feel of Match Day had to change because of COVID-19, the timing of the event could not have been better, and our community stepped up in a big way,” said Aubrey Abbott Patterson, president and CEO. “Over 900 people made gifts and that says more to me than the dollar amount ever could. This is a generous community that invests in its own people.”

The giving was steady throughout the day and by 4 p.m. was approaching $300,000. A check drop-off event from 5:30 to 7:30 garnered several thousand dollars more in donations, and online giving continued well into the event’s final hour at 11 p.m.

Thirty-four organizations from every nonprofit sector received the donations, which will be matched proportionately from the $100,000 pool.

The following were the highest-grossing organizations:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc.: $40,872.06
  • Food Bank of Reno County Inc.:  $32,813.63
  • United Way of Reno County: $31,516.02
  • New Beginnings Inc.: $25,639.54
  • Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre: $24,899.66

The following were the organizations that received the most gifts:

  • Food Bank of Reno County Inc.:  201 gifts
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc.: 142 gifts
  • Cause for Paws, Inc.:  133 ($7,814.43 raised)
  • BrightHouse Inc.: 125 ($19,383.46 raised)
  • Children’s Emergency Shelter Home Inc.: 104 ($13,479.49 raised)

“The Match Day magic comes from the wide-ranging scope of donors and organizations who participate,” Patterson said. “Gifts ranged from a teenager’s gift of $6 in quarters to tens of thousands by donor advisors with funds at the Community Foundation. Nonprofit organizations of all sizes benefit too. For example, even volunteer-led organizations like Cause for Paws and Family Community Theatre had a great Match Day because they’ve built a loyal donor base of people who support their mission.”
