Housing

A Community We Can All Come Home To

Help make safe, affordable housing possible for families across Reno County.

With your financial support, we can make Hutchinson a place where:

  • Seniors can enjoy high-quality, affordable homes
  • Builders can build
  • Young professionals can return and stay
  • Families can thrive

THE ISSUE

Hutchinson and Reno County are facing a quiet crisis

You may have heard there’s a housing shortage. But what you might not know is just how deep it goes—and how much it affects our future.

  • 45% of renters in Hutchinson spend more than 30% of their income on rent.
  • Employers are losing interested potential workers because they can’t find housing.
  • More than 1,100 housing units—of all types and price points—are needed to meet current demand and projected growth through 2035.
  • Young professionals and families are leaving or choosing not to come at all.

Thanks to $5.1 million in ARPA funds and strong local partnerships, Hutchinson has already made big strides:

  • 217 homes renovated by Interfaith Housing & SCKEDD
  • 224 Brush Up Hutch projects (up from just 5)
  • St. Elizabeth Hospital site cleared for 14–20 new homes
  • Small Homes Project building energy-efficient homes and training workers
  • $2.1 million in economic impact, paid to 40+ local contractors and vendor

Continuing this momentum requires investment.

Our Strategy:
A Stronger Housing Ecosystem for Hutchinson

Hutchinson Community Foundation is leading a bold, 3-year initiative, and we need your support. We’re working alongside local nonprofits, builders, and civic partners to invest in solutions that make our community stronger—now and for the future.

We’re deploying $2.46 million by 2028 through two core strategies:

1. Grants to Trusted Nonprofit Partners – $1.37 million

Funding supports organizations already making an impact, including:

  • Local housing nonprofits — expanding staff, systems, and programs at Interfaith Housing, New Beginnings, and others
  • Housing programs and neighborhood initiatives — like down payment assistance and targeted neighborhood renovations
  • Community Land Trust — establishing a permanent structure to preserve affordability for generations

2. Loans to Small-Scale Builders – $1.09 million

Supporting the people who are building what our community needs:

  • Working capital for infill housing development
  • Pre-development support — architectural plans, soil studies, permits for local developers
  • Downtown code mitigation — unlocking upper-floor housing opportunities
  • Affordable housing financing — filling gaps in major LIHTC projects

This isn’t a one-time fix—it’s a long-term investment in the health, growth, and future of our community.
