Grants at Work: Sylvia Helping Hands

The Fund for Reno County of Hutchinson Community Foundation is proud to support impactful projects like Sylvia Helping Hands’ Community Garden.

What They’re Achieving

Through their project, Sylvia Helping Hands is increasing the size of the community garden at the City building. In the spring of 2024, a few citizens started a community garden to benefit the Sylvia community with five raised beds with produce. This produce was harvested and placed in the city office and library for residents. Because of the success and appreciation of the citizens, they are expanding the garden this summer.

The Fund for Reno County was pleased to provide $2,460 to support this initiative through the Community Catalyst grant program as part of the 2025 Impact Cycle 1. While in Sylvia, Kari and Sarah also visited the playground equipment at the City Park that was funded in part by a $10,449 2024 Fund for Reno County grant.

Investing in Reno County’s Future

Thanks to the investment by passionate community volunteers, this project is helping Sylvia increase resident pride and connectivity, incrementally contributing to a more vibrant and resilient community where all people have the opportunity to thrive.
Honoring a Local Changemaker

Sylvia’s mayor, Gary Walker, recently passed away. A long-standing city council member and advocate for the well-being of his neighbors, Gary would have loved to watch the growth of the community garden. Read about Gary’s life and legacy here.
