Kathryn W. MireeHutchinson Community Foundation welcomes back Kathryn W. Miree, president of Kathryn W. Miree & Associates, to lead our Professional Advisors Workshop. The session is titled “Seven Options in Family Philanthropy” and is approved for two hours of CLE/CE for attorneys, accountants, trust officers and insurance agents.

The workshop will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at Prairie Dunes Country Club. Cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres will be served at a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. following the workshop. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. RSVP is required by filling out the form below.

High net worth clients, and even those who do not have a lot of assets, are increasingly interested in passing their values to younger generations by creating an institutional platform for family philanthropy. While private foundations are often the “go to” family philanthropy platform, private foundations are not always the answer because of the limitations on funding, paperwork and regulations around grants, required annual distributions, and self-dealing rule compliance. In this session, Ms. Miree will discuss multiple options for family philanthropy, provide a checklist to help advisors analyze client goals, and provide insight into philanthropy forms that include private foundations, supporting organizations, donor advised funds, charitable lead trusts, and other even easier options. She will show how to lead donors through the goal-setting discussion and select the entity that best meets their needs.

After roles as president & CEO of the Trust Company at Sterne, Agee & Leach and as senior vice president and manager of the Personal Trust Division at AmSouth Bank (now Regions), Miree established Kathryn W. Miree & Associates in 1997 to focus on charitable gift planning, administration and compliance in management of planned gifts and endowments, and effective communication with and engagement of donors. Her clients include nonprofits from all charitable sectors across the U.S. and in Canada. She is a graduate of Emory University and The University of Alabama School of Law and is a member of the Alabama Bar Association.

Ms. Miree has been a member of numerous professional associations, including as past president of the National Committee on Planned Giving, past president of the Alabama Planned Giving Council, and past president of the Estate Planning Council of Birmingham. She was inducted into the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners Hall of Fame in 2018 and the National Estate Planners and Councils Estate Planning Hall of Fame in 2020. She is a frequent lecturer, co-author of “The Family Foundation Handbook” and author of “The Professional Advisor’s Guide to Planned Giving.”
