$100K in matching dollars available for Match Day

On Tuesday, Reno County residents will have a chance to put their philanthropic muscles to work alongside a $100,000 matching pool during Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Match Day.

Donors will have the opportunity on May 5 to give to their choice of 34 local nonprofit organizations and see those gifts met proportionately from the matching pool. On the last Match Day in 2016, 729 donors raised more than $265,000 in 24 hours for 35 nonprofits.

Originally conceived as an in-person event, plans shifted to a virtual one in late March as COVID-19 social-distancing protocols were introduced. To that end, an online giving portal will accept donations round the clock, from midnight until 11:59 p.m. May 5, at ihearthutch.org.

Match Day traditionally focuses on helping nonprofits build their endowments, the long-term savings account that strengthens organizational sustainability. However, as a means of helping with financial recovery during the crisis, this year’s donations will be divided equally to support not only the endowments but also the immediate needs of nonprofits.

“Match Day has always been about building the long-term sustainability of local nonprofit organizations by helping to build their endowed savings accounts,” said Aubrey Abbott Patterson, community foundation president and CEO. “This year, it’s clear that sustainability will mean weathering the COVID- 19 crisis plus building the endowed fund for resiliency later, so we decided to split the gifts between immediate needs and the endowed fund.”

Inspired by a desire to support their community, donors stepped forward in recent weeks to provide an additional $40,000 to the foundation’s $60,000 pool, creating the $100,000 total. Those donations came from the following: the Meyer Charitable Trust, Tucker and Nation Meyer, Laura and Mike Dick, the Beach-Edwards Family Foundation, the Terry and R.A. Edwards Donor Advised Fund, the Ross Edwards Donor Advised Fund, The Beach-Edwards Family Foundation Fund, the Peg and John Stephens Donor Advised Fund, the Judy and Rich Manka Donor Advised Fund, the Kerr Family Donor Advised Fund, and the Susan and Sam Buttram Family Fund.

“These generous community leaders offered matching dollars because they realize the importance of a strong nonprofit sector in making our community a better place to live,” Patterson said.

As extra incentive to give, organizations with the most donations will receive grant prizes, and organizations who receive donations before 7 p.m. May 5 will be entered in a drawing for one of 12 $100 prize grants.

Donations are tax deductible and can be made to multiple organizations.

MATCH DAY ON MAIN

For those looking to get out of the house and celebrate the community spirit of the day, Match Day on Main offers donors the chance to make in-person check donations while dragging Hutchinson’s Main Street. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5, donors can deliver their checks from the safety of their vehicles at a drop-off in the DCI parking lot, between Second and Third avenues on the west side of Main Street. Vehicles should enter the parking lot’s Main Street entrance.

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo and Taco Tuesday, donors dropping off checks will receive a $2 coupon good toward a purchase at Anchor Away, Anchor Inn, Anchor Grill, Mi Tierra or Taco Hut. Coupons are limited and will be issued first come, first served while supply lasts.

Checks must be made payable to Hutchinson Community Foundation and be accompanied by a Giving Form, which can be downloaded ahead of time at hutchcf.org or can be filled out at the drop-off.

Checks are also being accepted by mail through May 6 at P.O. Box 298, Hutchinson, KS 67504.
