Zurcher back to Hutchinson for the second year to continue community education on systems thinking. \nAchieving significant system change in communities requires effective relationships among people with diverse perspectives\, life experiences\, and backgrounds. A simple explanation of this principle is “Relationships are primary. Everything else derives from them.” \nAn essential skill of systems leaders is the ability to convene diverse groups of people and facilitate collaboration among them. From artists\, to musicians\, to theatrical outlets\, the Council supports and motivates all efforts to keep the arts alive. With the retirement of its longtime director\, HRAH is in a period of transition and is looking to community stakeholders to develop a shared vision for Reno County arts and humanities that will guide their work for the next five years. Zurcher to Hutchinson for the second year to continue community education on systems thinking. \nUnderstanding the difference between a reactive orientation (solving problems) and a generative orientation (creating the future) is only the first step toward achieving systems change. Knowing how to apply that understanding is critical to achieving outcomes. In this workshop\, you will learn to lead conversations and work sessions that shift participants’ focus from immediate problems to long-term possibilities and outcomes. \nWe will practice staying in the generative orientation by looking at the concept of a “one-stop shop” for people seeking assistance in Reno County. For many years\, multiple conversations have been occurring and continue to occur around what the most effective and efficient system for people in need should look like. And because this conversation is focused on people (and even organizations) in crisis\, it is natural and easy to get stuck in the reactive orientation\, fixing problems\, rather than working toward the vision—the system—we truly want to create for people in need our community. \nIdeally\, workshop participants will have some familiarity with systems thinking. This workshop builds from a basic understanding of The Core Theory of Success\, which says that as the quality of relationships rises\, the quality of thinking improves\, leading to an increase in the quality of actions and results. Examples of challenges that might be explored during the workshop include How can we increase our neighborhood’s identity?\, How can we inspire youth to get civically engaged?\, or How can we connect the Hutchinson Art Center to Main Street? Each individual or group will develop their own challenge to explore in the workshop\, which will include: \n\nGenerating new ideas through brainstorming activities intended to prompt new thinking\nSelecting an idea that is worth testing or prototyping\nPitching an idea to a small group for immediate feedback\nTranslating the idea into a Make It Greater Grant proposal\nTechnical assistance on the Make it Greater Grant Application\n\nSpace is limited to 32 participants. Please RSVP in advance. \nAt this special luncheon on October 12 from 11:30-1:00\, we will explore the challenge of building resilience in children experiencing trauma and discuss how our organizations and we as individuals can contribute to helping a child overcome their adverse childhood experiences. \nJim Sporleder\, a retired principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla\, Washington\, will lead the conversation. Under Jim’s leadership\, Lincoln High School became a “Trauma Informed” school\, gaining national attention due to a dramatic drop in out of school suspensions\, increased graduation rates\, and the number of students going on to post-secondary education. These dramatic changes were captured in the documentary\, Paper Tigers\, released in 2015. Plum Hutchinson KS\, 67501\nContact: Kari Mailloux | (620) 663-5293 \nEducators and early childhood professionals serving children birth to five in Reno County are invited to attend a two-day training on Conscious Discipline\, with a focus on Managing Emotional Mayhem\, with Shana Schmidt. The training will be held at the Cosmosphere\, 1100 N. Plum\, in Hutchinson. Lunch will be provided at no cost. \nConscious Discipline® is the most comprehensive discipline program available. It is specifically designed to provide parents & caregivers with the awareness and skills needed to create safe\, connected\, problem-solving environments. Rooted in the latest brain research Conscious Discipline® offers multiple areas of focus\, from classroom management using the 7 Skills\, managing emotional responses and structuring environments for success\, to reflecting on how our history shapes our patterns of behavior and knowing we have the ability to create new HEALTHY patterns assuring future success for generations. \nThis targeted training on Managing Emotional Mayhem will help you if you have struggled with helping a child manage frustration or if you struggle with finding a better way to respond to difficult behaviors. Participants will have the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life through recognizing patterns of behavior and simple techniques that build attachment\, self-control\, and courage. From self-regulation to classroom management\, it’s time to do things differently! \nThe training will be led by Shana Schmidt\, LPC\, IMH-E®(III)\, owner and trainer at Unification Place\, LLC. Plum Hutchinson KS\, 67501\nContact: Sarah Blake (620) 663-5293 \nPlease join us for a professional development workshop featuring Kathy Zurcher. \nThis free annual workshop is intended for teams of nonprofit or community-benefit organization staff\, board members\, and volunteers\, as well as engaged citizens who wish to make progress on community challenges and opportunities. \nWe encourage teams of two or more from each organization to promote institutional knowledge and conversation. Each attendee from an organization must RSVP separately. In the case of community members\, they are not required to attend on behalf of a specific organization. \nWorkshop: Achieving Your Vision Through Systems Thinking\nPresenter: Kathy Zurcher\n\nThe world seems to be changing faster and faster–from the technologies available to us\, to the increasing scope of our interactions. Moreover\, the issues facing our communities are growing ever more complex. In these circumstances\, good intentions and popular programs are not enough. How do we navigate such change and address these issues–not only in our work lives but also in our communities\, schools\, and families? \nRelationships among people–in organizations and communities–who come together to accomplish a purpose are central to achieving policy\, systems\, and environmental changes. Developing systems thinking capacities and applying them to community work enhances our abilities to realize our vision for our community and to assure programs and activities are aligned to achieve significant results. \nThis workshop will develop your systems thinking capacities to enhance your relationships and partnerships\, maintain focus on intended results\, and align work of partners. She is the former Director of Program and Organizational learning for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Before joining the Foundation\, Kathy worked in health care\, at University of Minnesota Extension\, and as a high school teacher. \nKathy uses active\, engaging\, practical methods to teach applied systems thinking to diverse community members and people in every role in organizations\, from the United States\, southern Africa\, Latin America\, and South America. From rural Iowa\, California\, Montana\, and Kentucky to urban neighborhoods in Detroit\, Brooklyn\, and Oakland\, she has facilitated communities as they sought to improve their local food system\, create communities that support healthy eating and active living\, develop a more sustainable local economy\, improve education\, develop community systems that support educational and life success for all children\, and assure health equity.
