We’ll hear from two people working on different adaptive challenges and then have a series of small-group conversations to process the intersection between the two\, test multiple interpretations\, and explore a collective purpose for progress. A free lunch will be provided. \nOn May 20\, our guests will be Denice Gilliland-Burbank with the United Way of Reno County and Clint Nelson with Interfaith Housing & Community Services. Together\, we’ll explore the relationship between the efforts to create more access to high-quality\, affordable childcare and housing in Hutchinson and Reno County. And we’ll be on site at a childcare center: Abundant Life Childcare & Preschool inside The Father’s House at 1505 E. 20th in Hutchinson. \nWe’re also going to intentionally use Kansas Leadership Center principles and language\, so this will be a great opportunity to practice applying the KLC approach to real-world situations. Plum St. \nSandtray processing can be a powerful way of mindful and creative reflection\, and it is frequently used in the therapy room for children\, adults\, families\, and groups. Items and/or words are placed in a sandtray to process various themes. In partnership with Hutchinson Community Foundation\, Melody Wagler\, therapist at Hutchinson Community College\, will be offering various group sandtray processing times to community partners as a way to reflect on where each of us is currently and where we want or hope to be as people working to better the community. The group experience is intended to be a mindful and hopeful reflection on growth and change in the past year and to foster connection with nine other community members. (A side bonus is getting to learn about and experience pieces of what sandtray processing could be in a therapy setting.) We aim to support the work of Changemakers happening in all areas of Reno County\, strengthening social capital and community pride. The more social capital a community has and the stronger the sense of place and belonging residents feel\, the more committed to each other and the world around them they become. \nEach year\, Hutchinson Community Foundation seeks applicants to participate on the Changemakers at Work Grants Committee that will represent the diversity of Reno County. Though the Community Foundation has hosted occasional workshops aimed at board governance and development\, it is difficult to reach a critical mass of understanding and involvement\, particularly when boards are always changing. Therefore\, we are interested in how we can build a board member experience into the system of services in Reno County. We are particularly interested in educating new board members about the role and responsibilities of board service\, adaptive leadership\, and systems thinking. \nUsing a design thinking and systems thinking approach\, we invite interested nonprofit staff\, board members\, or volunteers to collaborate with us on creating this experience. We will conduct an initial meeting to get to know one another and discuss the design process on Friday\, Aug. 16\, from 9 to 10 a.m. in Hutch CF’s Collaboration Corner. It requires considering the many stakeholders and factors that could affect outcomes\, having deep understanding of people while seeing the bigger picture\, gaining clarity and conviction despite incomplete information\, and discovering and choosing interventions that have impact\, in the multitude of possibilities. Design thinking—or human-centered design—is a powerful methodology and mindset to employ in this work. \nUsing resources from Stanford University’s d.school\, we will go through a full design cycle in 90 minutes. This is a fast-paced experiential project where participants pair up to interview each other\, identify real needs\, and develop a solution for an example experience. It is not surprising then that placemaking — optimizing place quality — has been identified as potentially one of the most transformational ideas for cities in the 21st century. \nBuilding from recent visits from the Project for Public Spaces and Strong Towns to help Reno County better understand how we can strategically invest in our public places that will lead to local economic growth\, Hutchinson Community Foundation is proud to partner with Hutch Rec and Young Professionals of Reno County to welcome Dr. Katherine Loflin\, The City Doctor\, to present “Place Science: Loving Where You Live and Why It Matters to People\, Places and Local Economies\,” the place science and placemaking framework. \nPlace science is the study of the relationship between people and a city\, and placemaking is the strength-based strategy by which places are optimized in key areas to foster that relationship for the benefit of people and places. \nFollowing her talk\, local resident-led examples will be highlighted to mine lessons learned and impact\, as well as further opportunities to apply the place science framework locally. \nLoflin is an award-winning\, internationally recognized trailblazer in place science\, earning her the moniker of The City Doctor. She has held leadership roles in some of the most groundbreaking place science projects and research in the world. She is the author of “Place Match: The City Doctor’s Guide to Finding Where You Belong\,” principal of her own global consulting practice with over a decade in service\, and a two-time TEDx speaker on place science. She has a Ph.D. in social work with a concentration in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously\, she served as program director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami\, Florida\, where she guided the foundation’s annual investment of millions in the areas of civic engagement\, nonprofit capacity building\, program evaluation\, community foundations\, disaster relief\, and city-specific grantmaking.

The session will be from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 in the Banquet Room at the Cosmosphere\, 1100 N. Plum\, Hutchinson. \nWe believe nonprofits are humanity in action—the only organizations created solely to make our world better. Staff and boards show up with heart\, soul\, intelligence and determination to do something truly extraordinary. But the path isn’t always clear. This hands-on\, half-day workshop will cover: \n\nRoles for board and staff\nStrategic plans\, including theory of change and core messaging\nBylaw basics and committees\nSuccession planning\nHiring\, firing and annual review of CEO/ED\nFundraising and giving\nSelf-assessment\n\nThe workshop will include experiential learning and actionable takeaways\, with multiple fifteen-minute hands-on exercises and plenty of time for questions and conversation between brief\, lively presentations. \nEach workshop participant will be provided with a workbook that includes each exercise\, access to electronic versions of all worksheets for future use\, and a one-month\, no-charge membership to Fundraisers’ Monthly\, including full access to the resource library. \nTogether\, we will enlarge understanding\, remove obstacles to progress\, and facilitate deeper board/staff partnership. The workshop will begin promptly at 8 a.m. \nAbout Generous Change \nNancy Jackson and Jenna Goodman bring a combined 25 years of nonprofit leadership and have personally raised over $70 million for arts\, education and environment as staff and volunteers. They don’t just teach fundraising\, they do it\, actively and ambitiously. \nNancy began her development career at the Music Center of Los Angeles County\, where she coordinated the efforts of the premier women’s support organization. After graduate school and ten years acquiring and shaping scholarly books at the University Press of Kansas\, she moved to KU Endowment as development director for the Spencer Museum of Art. In 2007\, Nancy left KU to found and lead the award-winning Climate & Energy Project (CEP)\, which was featured on the front page of the New York Times. Nancy returned to KU Endowment in 2010 as Team Lead for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences\, where she designed and executed a successful three-year\, $38 million capital campaign for the Earth\, Energy & Environment Center. In January\, she began a one-year term as the Simons Public Humanities Fellow at KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities\, where she is completing a project on publicly engaged scholarship and writing a book on impact philanthropy. \nJenna started her twelve-year fundraising career at the University of Central Missouri after selling a successful coffee shop she bought in college. She spent ten years raising tens of millions for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at KU Endowment\, where she created best-in-class training for new development professionals. Employees trained under her rubric were effective months more swiftly than in the past and have remained successful and engaged. Jenna also worked closely with new dean Carl Lejuez to prepare him for fundraising and co-create fundable initiatives following Far Above. The program will address the different rules that apply to IRAs compared to 401(k) plans and solutions to the most common obstacles that arise in second marriages where a client may have assets in both types of retirement plans. For example\, what legal requirements must be met for some or all of the IRA or 401(k) assets to be payable to children from a prior marriage? \nThe workshop will also contain an update on planning lifetime charitable gifts from IRAs in 2018\, followed by planning for the best way to structure charitable bequests of retirement assets. What strategies work best\, and what are the most common problems estate planners encounter? What actions can be taken to overcome the challenges and achieve a positive tax outcome? Professor Hoyt will demonstrate how every charitable bequest\, if properly structured\, can reduce the income tax liability of a trust\, an estate\, and their beneficiaries rather than just provide estate tax savings. \nProfessor Hoyt teaches courses on federal income taxation\, charitable organizations and retirement plans at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Previously\, he was with the law firm of Spencer\, Fane\, Britt & Browne in Kansas City\, Missouri. He received an undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University\, and he received dual law and accounting degrees from the University of Wisconsin. \nHoyt is the vice chairman of the RPTE Charitable Group\, and he serves on the editorial board of Trusts and Estates magazine. Knowing how to apply that understanding is critical to achieving outcomes. In this workshop\, you will learn to lead conversations and work sessions that shift participants’ focus from immediate problems to long-term possibilities and outcomes. \nWe will practice staying in the generative orientation by looking at the concept of a “one-stop shop” for people seeking assistance in Reno County. For many years\, multiple conversations have been occurring and continue to occur around what the most effective and efficient system for people in need should look like. And because this conversation is focused on people (and even organizations) in crisis\, it is natural and easy to get stuck in the reactive orientation\, fixing problems\, rather than working toward the vision—the system—we truly want to create for people in need our community. \nIdeally\, workshop participants will have some familiarity with systems thinking.
