SUMMARY:Community Connect: Design Thinking Crash Course
DESCRIPTION:Where: Hutchinson Community Foundation Collaboration Corner\, 1 N. Main St.\, Suite 501 \nContact: Wendy Skellenger | wendy@hutchcf.org | 620-663-5293 \nIn an effort to inspire innovative leadership and collaboration\, Hutchinson Community Foundation hosts a Community Connect series open to nonprofit staff and board members\, as well as interested members of the larger community. \nSocial change is complex work. It requires considering the many stakeholders and factors that could affect outcomes\, having deep understanding of people while seeing the bigger picture\, gaining clarity and conviction despite incomplete information\, and discovering and choosing interventions that have impact\, in the multitude of possibilities. Design thinking—or human-centered design—is a powerful methodology and mindset to employ in this work. \nUsing resources from Stanford University’s d.school\, we will go through a full design cycle in 90 minutes. This is a fast-paced experiential project where participants pair up to interview each other\, identify real needs\, and develop a solution for an example experience. No previous design experience is required. \nThe final 30 minutes will be spent in debrief and considering how to apply design thinking in our organizations and in the community. \nPlease join us to learn a new approach to making progress on adaptive challenges. Registration is required by filling out the form below. \n[captainform id=”1263598″]

SUMMARY:Evening with Dr. Katherine Loflin
DESCRIPTION:What: “Place Science: Loving Where You Live and Why It Matters to People\, Places and Local Economies” \nWhere: Hutchinson Art Center\, 405 N. Washington St. \nContact: Wendy Skellenger | wendy@hutchcf.org | 620-663-5293 \nThe place we live has always influenced every aspect of our lives. But in today’s world\, its influence is expanding to it now being a key determinate in both our individual and overall place success. This development has caught the attention of leaders who now realize their growing dependence on place quality in ways they never before imagined. It is not surprising then that placemaking — optimizing place quality — has been identified as potentially one of the most transformational ideas for cities in the 21st century. \nBuilding from recent visits from the Project for Public Spaces and Strong Towns to help Reno County better understand how we can strategically invest in our public places that will lead to local economic growth\, Hutchinson Community Foundation is proud to partner with Hutch Rec and Young Professionals of Reno County to welcome Dr. Katherine Loflin\, The City Doctor\, to present “Place Science: Loving Where You Live and Why It Matters to People\, Places and Local Economies\,” the place science and placemaking framework. \nPlace science is the study of the relationship between people and a city\, and placemaking is the strength-based strategy by which places are optimized in key areas to foster that relationship for the benefit of people and places. \nFollowing her talk\, local resident-led examples will be highlighted to mine lessons learned and impact\, as well as further opportunities to apply the place science framework locally. \nLoflin is an award-winning\, internationally recognized trailblazer in place science\, earning her the moniker of The City Doctor. She has held leadership roles in some of the most groundbreaking place science projects and research in the world. She is the author of “Place Match: The City Doctor’s Guide to Finding Where You Belong\,” principal of her own global consulting practice with over a decade in service\, and a two-time TEDx speaker on place science. She has a Ph.D. in social work with a concentration in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously\, she served as program director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami\, Florida\, where she guided the foundation’s annual investment of millions in the areas of civic engagement\, nonprofit capacity building\, program evaluation\, community foundations\, disaster relief\, and city-specific grantmaking.

SUMMARY:Jan. 26 Make It Greater Grants workshop
DESCRIPTION:Where: Hutchinson Public Library auditorium\, 901 N. Main St. \nHutchinson Community Foundation invites the Reno County community to attend our Make It Greater Grants workshop Saturday\, January 26\, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hutchinson Community Foundation. \nMake It Greater Grants are small ($250-$2\,500) but have the potential to make significant impacts on communities across Reno County by bringing people together around a shared challenge or furthering community identity and pride. But sometimes it’s easy to think big and hard to think small. This workshop will help community members think in terms of “lighter\, quicker\, cheaper” projects that might be short-term\, low-cost interventions or initiatives that could make the case for further investment or projects that experiment with new ways of bringing people together. Read about last year’s recipients by scrolling to Make It Greater Grants here. \nWe encourage groups of two or more to come to the workshop together around a shared challenge\, but individuals are also welcome. Examples of challenges that might be explored during the workshop include: \n\nHow can we increase our neighborhood’s identity?\nHow can we inspire youth to become civically engaged?\nHow can we connect the Hutchinson Art Center to Main Street?\n\nEach individual or group will develop their own challenge to explore in the workshop\, which will include: \n\nGenerating new ideas through brainstorming activities intended to prompt new thinking\nSelecting an idea that is worth testing or prototyping\nPitching an idea to a small group for immediate feedback\nTranslating the idea into a Make It Greater Grant proposal\nTechnical assistance on the Make it Greater Grant Application\n\nSpace is limited to 30 participants. Registration is required by filling out the form below. Please familiarize yourself with the Make It Greater Grant Guidelines and Application prior to registering for or attending a workshop. We hope you’ll join us! \nMake It Greater grant applications are due in the Community Foundation Office by noon on February 15\, 2019. \nUPDATE: Because of low interest\, the Jan. 26 Make It Greater grants workshop is canceled. However\, an informational meeting about the grant application process will take place beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 22 for those who are interested. No reservation is required to attend. For further questions about Make It Greater grants\, contact Sarah Blake: sarah@hutchcf.org or 620-663-5293.

SUMMARY:2018 Nonprofit Staff and Board Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Title: Driving Progress and Partnership through Board Governance \nWhere: Banquet Room\,Cosmosphere\, 1100 N. Plum\, Hutchinson\, KS 67501 \nCost: FREE \nContact: Wendy Skellenger | wendy@hutchcf.org | 620-663-5293 \nHutchinson Community Foundation\, in an effort to increase nonprofit capacity in Reno County\, is pleased to welcome Nancy Jackson and Jenna Goodman of Generous Change to Hutchinson to present a workshop on board governance for nonprofit staff and board members. The session will be from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 in the Banquet Room at the Cosmosphere\, 1100 N. Plum\, Hutchinson. \nWe believe nonprofits are humanity in action—the only organizations created solely to make our world better. Staff and boards show up with heart\, soul\, intelligence and determination to do something truly extraordinary. But the path isn’t always clear. This hands-on\, half-day workshop will cover: \n\nRoles for board and staff\nStrategic plans\, including theory of change and core messaging\nBylaw basics and committees\nSuccession planning\nHiring\, firing and annual review of CEO/ED\nFundraising and giving\nSelf-assessment\n\nThe workshop will include experiential learning and actionable takeaways\, with multiple fifteen-minute hands-on exercises and plenty of time for questions and conversation between brief\, lively presentations. \nEach workshop participant will be provided with a workbook that includes each exercise\, access to electronic versions of all worksheets for future use\, and a one-month\, no-charge membership to Fundraisers’ Monthly\, including full access to the resource library. \nTogether\, we will enlarge understanding\, remove obstacles to progress\, and facilitate deeper board/staff partnership. You will leave with tools to drive your nonprofit forward. \nCheck in will start at 7:30 a.m.\, with a light breakfast and coffee provided. The workshop will begin promptly at 8 a.m. \nAbout Generous Change \nNancy Jackson and Jenna Goodman bring a combined 25 years of nonprofit leadership and have personally raised over $70 million for arts\, education and environment as staff and volunteers. They don’t just teach fundraising\, they do it\, actively and ambitiously. \nNancy began her development career at the Music Center of Los Angeles County\, where she coordinated the efforts of the premier women’s support organization. After graduate school and ten years acquiring and shaping scholarly books at the University Press of Kansas\, she moved to KU Endowment as development director for the Spencer Museum of Art. In 2007\, Nancy left KU to found and lead the award-winning Climate & Energy Project (CEP)\, which was featured on the front page of the New York Times. Nancy returned to KU Endowment in 2010 as Team Lead for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences\, where she designed and executed a successful three-year\, $38 million capital campaign for the Earth\, Energy & Environment Center. In January\, she began a one-year term as the Simons Public Humanities Fellow at KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities\, where she is completing a project on publicly engaged scholarship and writing a book on impact philanthropy. \nJenna started her twelve-year fundraising career at the University of Central Missouri after selling a successful coffee shop she bought in college. She spent ten years raising tens of millions for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at KU Endowment\, where she created best-in-class training for new development professionals. Employees trained under her rubric were effective months more swiftly than in the past and have remained successful and engaged. Jenna also worked closely with new dean Carl Lejuez to prepare him for fundraising and co-create fundable initiatives following Far Above. Together\, they partnered with donors across the country to raise millions of dollars for new college initiatives\, including the Research Excellence Fund\, the Cofrin-Logan Center for Addiction Research & Training\, and the Birenboim-Green Prize\, a $10 million endowment to create an international prize for biochemistry/chemical biology research. \n[captainform id=”1240443″]

This year the session is titled “Retirement Accounts in First and Second Marriages: The Fun Begins” and is approved for two hours of CLE/CE for attorneys\, accountants\, trust officers\, financial planners and insurance agents. \nThe workshop will be from 4 to 6 p.m.\, with cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres served at a reception from 6 to 7 p.m.\, Sept. 6 at Prairie Dunes Country Club. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. RSVP is required by filling out the form below. You may pay the continuing education fee the following ways: \n\nBy credit card when prompted after filling out the RSVP form;\nBy mailing payment to Hutchinson Community Foundation\, P.O. Box 298\, Hutchinson\, KS 67504;\nBy cash or check at the time of the workshop.\n\nProfessor Hoyt will address strategies\, traps and solutions for challenging situations that estate planners frequently face. The program will address the different rules that apply to IRAs compared to 401(k) plans and solutions to the most common obstacles that arise in second marriages where a client may have assets in both types of retirement plans. For example\, what legal requirements must be met for some or all of the IRA or 401(k) assets to be payable to children from a prior marriage? \nThe workshop will also contain an update on planning lifetime charitable gifts from IRAs in 2018\, followed by planning for the best way to structure charitable bequests of retirement assets. What strategies work best\, and what are the most common problems estate planners encounter? What actions can be taken to overcome the challenges and achieve a positive tax outcome? Professor Hoyt will demonstrate how every charitable bequest\, if properly structured\, can reduce the income tax liability of a trust\, an estate\, and their beneficiaries rather than just provide estate tax savings. \nProfessor Hoyt teaches courses on federal income taxation\, charitable organizations and retirement plans at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Previously\, he was with the law firm of Spencer\, Fane\, Britt & Browne in Kansas City\, Missouri. He received an undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University\, and he received dual law and accounting degrees from the University of Wisconsin. \nHoyt is the vice chairman of the RPTE Charitable Group\, and he serves on the editorial board of Trusts and Estates magazine. He is an ACTEC fellow and has been designated by his peers as a “Best Lawyer.” He was elected to the Estate Planning Hall of Fame by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils. \nPLEASE NOTE: Your reservation is complete after clicking on the RSVP button. However\, after filling out the RSVP form\, you will then be prompted to fill out a credit card form. If you are not seeking continuing education credit or do not wish to pay the fee with a credit card\, you do not need to fill out the credit card form. \n[captainform id=”1239285″]

SUMMARY:Applying a Generative Orientation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Where: Hutchinson Public Library Auditorium\, 901 N. Main St. \nContact: Wendy Skellenger | wendy@hutchcf.org | 620-663-5293 \nHutchinson Community Foundation is pleased to welcome back Kathleen A. Zurcher to Hutchinson for the second year to continue community education on systems thinking. \nUnderstanding the difference between a reactive orientation (solving problems) and a generative orientation (creating the future) is only the first step toward achieving systems change. Knowing how to apply that understanding is critical to achieving outcomes. In this workshop\, you will learn to lead conversations and work sessions that shift participants’ focus from immediate problems to long-term possibilities and outcomes. \nWe will practice staying in the generative orientation by looking at the concept of a “one-stop shop” for people seeking assistance in Reno County. For many years\, multiple conversations have been occurring and continue to occur around what the most effective and efficient system for people in need should look like. And because this conversation is focused on people (and even organizations) in crisis\, it is natural and easy to get stuck in the reactive orientation\, fixing problems\, rather than working toward the vision—the system—we truly want to create for people in need our community. \nIdeally\, workshop participants will have some familiarity with systems thinking. This workshop builds from a basic understanding of The Core Theory of Success\, which says that as the quality of relationships rises\, the quality of thinking improves\, leading to an increase in the quality of actions and results. Achieving high-quality results has a positive effect on the quality of relationships\, creating a reinforcing engine of success. \nRegistration is required by filling out the form below and clicking on the RSVP button. \nAbout Kathleen A. Zurcher \nKathy works with communities around the country on applying systems thinking to transform systems and create the future they truly want for children and families. Main St.\, Hutchinson \nThis session will help you maximize engagement by your board of directors and ensure their full participation in the key aspects of their philanthropic activities for your organization: giving\, asking\, joining\, and serving. \nThis highly practical workshop will feature concrete tips and tools designed to help increase your fundraising success by enabling your board to tap into their confidence and passion. Learn how to engage your board in a process that clarifies exactly what’s expected of each member — one that creates consensus around board priorities and transforms board involvement. Using Kay Sprinkel Grace’s “AAA” model\, we will explore the power of board satisfaction and how it manifests in increased giving and outreach to others. We will also cover the critical importance of thinking of your board members and other loyal donor-investors as partners in your impact and work and share tools for helping to integrate this philosophy successfully. Finally\, we will provide tips and strategies for recruiting and evaluating board members to ensure that they understand their role in donor development and fundraising\, whether as an ambassador\, an advocate\, and/or an asker. \nSpeakers for this session include Darian Rodriguez Heyman and fundraising guru\, consultant\, public speaker\, and best-selling author of “Beyond Fund Raising” and “The AAA Way to Fundraising Success\,” Kay Sprinkel Grace. \n  \n\n  \nMeasurement and Analysis: The Key to Fundraising and Program Performance \nWhen: 1-3 p.m. May 24 \nWhere: Hutchinson Community Foundation Training Room\, First National Center fifth floor\, 1 N. Main St.\, Hutchinson \nNonprofit fundraising relies heavily on your ability to both make and convey impact. Join us for a dynamic workshop designed to help you learn the ins and outs of program and fundraising measurement and analysis\, starting with how to develop a measurement and evaluation plan\, and then looking at how to integrate it into your overarching strategic plan. From there we’ll share tips and tools for fostering collaboration to promote effective analysis and review important distinctions between outputs and outcomes. You will also learn how to benchmark your performance and impact against others in your field and create an organizational dashboard to track success against a series of “key performance indicators” that enable your staff\, board\, and key advisors to track your programmatic and operational health. \nJoin us and learn how to create a culture in your organization that values collecting both data and success stories\, enabling you to translate your theory of change into practical metrics that can be monitored and optimized to fuel your performance and impact. \nSpeakers for this session include Darian Rodriguez Heyman and vice president of data and analytics at Blackbaud and best-selling author of “Data Driven Nonprofits\,” Steve MacLaughlin. \n[captainform id=”1167151″][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Feb. 8 Make It Greater Grant Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hutchinson Community Foundation invites the community to a workshop on our Make It Greater Grants\, for which applications are due March 9\, 2018. \nMake It Greater Grants are small ($250-$2\,500) but have the potential to make significant impacts on communities across Reno County by bringing people together around a shared challenge or furthering community identity and pride. But sometimes it’s easy to think big and hard to think small. This workshop will help community members think in terms of “lighter\, quicker\, cheaper” projects that might be short-term\, low-cost interventions or initiatives that could make the case for further investment or experiment with new ways of bringing people together. \nWe encourage groups of two or more to come to the workshop together around a shared challenge\, but individuals are also welcome. Examples of challenges that might be explored during the workshop include How can we increase our neighborhood’s identity?\, How can we inspire youth to get civically engaged?\, or How can we connect the Hutchinson Art Center to Main Street? Each individual or group will develop their own challenge to explore in the workshop\, which will include: \n\nGenerating new ideas through brainstorming activities intended to prompt new thinking\nSelecting an idea that is worth testing or prototyping\nPitching an idea to a small group for immediate feedback\nTranslating the idea into a Make It Greater Grant proposal\nTechnical assistance on the Make it Greater Grant Application\n\nSpace is limited to 32 participants. Please familiarize yourself with the Make It Greater Grant Guidelines and Application prior to registering for or attending the workshop. \nThis workshop has been cancelled due to low registration numbers. If you would like to talk through your Make It Greater Grant idea\, please reach out to Program Associate Sarah Blake at 620.663.5293 or Sarah@HutchCF.org.

Please RSVP in advance. \nAt this special luncheon on October 12 from 11:30-1:00\, we will explore the challenge of building resilience in children experiencing trauma and discuss how our organizations and we as individuals can contribute to helping a child overcome their adverse childhood experiences. \nJim Sporleder\, a retired principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla\, Washington\, will lead the conversation. Under Jim’s leadership\, Lincoln High School became a “Trauma Informed” school\, gaining national attention due to a dramatic drop in out of school suspensions\, increased graduation rates\, and the number of students going on to post-secondary education. These dramatic changes were captured in the documentary\, Paper Tigers\, released in 2015. Jim will be in Hutchinson to work with Hutchinson USD 308 on becoming trauma informed schools\, and at the Luncheon he will help us explore how the community can reinforce the schools’ approach. \nWe have reached capacity for the luncheon\, but please email Kari Mailloux at kari@hutchcf.org if you would like to be added to the waitlist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
