Kari is a Hutchinson native and a 2003 graduate of Hutchinson High School, where she received the Central Bank and Trust Young Kansan Award and was a Davis Foundation Scholarship finalist. She graduated summa cum laude with degrees in literature from Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Kansas. Her poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in various journals.

She returned to Hutchinson in May after spending three years as the assistant director of the Hub City Writers Project, a nonprofit arts organization in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where she directed programming centered on community-building through dynamic arts and ideas. Among other projects, she edited and marketed award-winning books, established programs to nurture writers and cultivate readers in the Southeast, and co-founded and organized the annual state-wide Expecting Goodness Short Film Festival that connected SC writers and their stories to filmmakers.

Happy to be back in her hometown, Kari loves trying new restaurants with her fiance Phillip and walking along the river with her dog Scooter.
